10/15/1977 Born in Seattle, WA

9/22/1981 Redesigned the back seat of the family car with a permanent marker.

5/1/1991 Started designing and printing for my parents’ t-shirt business.

8/14/1994 First date with Alicia. We went to King’s Teriyaki in between our drivers ed classes. She kept the menu.

9/7/1995 First day of class in Advertising/Design, a transfer class at Alicia’s high school. I was mostly interested in seeing more of my girlfriend.

6/28/1996 Won first place in the Advertising/Design division at the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America national competition in Kansas City, KS.

9/15/1997 Began working as a poster artist at the Publicity Center at school. My first project was a banner for the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Alliance. My conservative upbringing ringing clearly in my ears, I was sure that graphic design would be the death of my soul.

6/26/1999 Alicia married me, despite my annoying habit of pointing out typefaces to her.

6/12/2000 Graduated from Western Washington University with a BA in Studio Art with concentrations in Graphic Design and Printmaking.

9/18/2000 Began working at Malmquist Design in Berkeley, CA. A few months later, looking for an excuse to make posters, I started Dandy Co.

8/21/2001 Accepted as a Teaching Assistant at Mills College in the Book Arts Program.

1/19/2002 Taught my first design class at Las Positas College.

3/22/2003 Accepted to the MFA program at California College of the Arts after many days of anxiously checking the mailbox.

7/23/2005 Packed everything up and left California for Seattle, with plans to teach at Seattle Pacific University, Cornish College of the Arts, and Seattle University. [ed. 1/5/06: Down to just Cornish and Seattle U.]

1/24/2006 Joined the board of the Seattle Center for Book Arts.

10/1/2006 Hannah Ruth Shafer is born at exactly 2 am.

12/4/2009 Robinson Trenton Shafer's adoption is finalized.
